Eastport Pram kit

First-time boatbuilders, here. My son and I were enjoying the first couple of hours working on our project but quickly got stumped when it was time to put the transoms in place. The pre-cut contours of the transoms do not easily fit in place against the first two installed planks without quite a bit of force, even then, are not able to be kept in place with just a twist of wire. I have loosened all wires along the planks to allow for flexibility and have gotten a little bit of give, but not nearly enough. The manual makes it look so simple...am I missing something here? Any suggestions or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated!
