Its really tough to blend paint or varnish repairs without it looking like a patch. I tend to use tiny artists brushes to fill in the obvious stuff without too much overlap. Its the overlap that will show in the right light but who cares. Seal it and go. If you just gotta fix it without a patch look then add enough coats to fill it in completely then sand/polish off the over lap. Less work to just refinish every few years.
