Scratch refinishing......

When I get scratches in a varnished side or deck, lets say from scraping a rock or dock so it is deep - but not showing wood and more than a surface scratch. Lets say in just a few inch long area. What is the proper way to restore that area so that it blends with the rest of the unmarred surface.
