Frank,

Next time you might want to consider using tubular CF. It's woven like a tube sock and you just pull it very tightly up over the PVC or whatever else you use as a mandrel. It completely eliminates the float problem. It'll make the layup a lot more fun than fiddling around with all those wires and you'll get results just about as good as vacuuming it just by running your (gloved) hands up and down the shaft until all the excess is wipes off.
