Hi. Are you using a power sander - like a ROS? If so, 80 grit may be a little too aggressive - especially at the edges. I'd go more with 100 or 150. If you're hand sanding with the 80 grit glued to 11 inch wooden boards, then sure. Go easy and keep it flat. The copper wire is really very soft and will sand even with the wood.
Next time, think about heating the wires with a soldering iron, and pulling them out altogether. Saves a little weight and you won't have those shiny little ends showing through if you choose to do a bright (varnish) finish.
Looks like a boat now doesn't it?
