paint or varnish

I am at a crossroad as to finishing with varnishing or painting the hull. I would like to know which holds up better to use and abuse I dont mind making the boat I just want to get the most out of the finish. More paddle less brush. thanks for any help. Hope kurt has recovered we need him for advice and insperation.
