Before filling any indentation, first try steaming it out with a wet rag and a clothes iron. Simply lay a sopping wet rag over your dent, ding, runner, etc., and apply the iron set to 'high'. This also works well on furniture.
Fiberglassing over the stem strips is no big deal. If you want to replace 'em, the 'glass won't even slow you down. Go ahead; ask me how I know...
