mounting footbarces

I�ve just read over the directions that came with my foot braces and they difer slightly form the instructions in the New Kayak shop. I�m wondering which methods are preferable:

1. the book says to use a 3mm to 4mm thick pieces of ply wood, but the instructions say to use fiberglass tape for a backing 2. the books says to epoxy they foot braces as well as screw them (with confusing directions on epoxying first, then wet sanding?), the instructions omitted this step.
