Stencil or decal

Making my first boat and made an error on one side panel where the scarf slipped(only slipped) and I had to sand. It appears that this will not look great as a bright finish and I was wondering since it is a small area--Could I cover this with some artwork or a decal? This I think might give the kayak some indiviuality and it would allow for the bright finish as well. When should I apply the decal and how? I saw a prior thred on this but my computer skills are lacking. I would appreciate hearing anyone's thoughts. Thank you in advance.
