you need an overhang.

i put brown packing tape about 1/2 inch below the sheer line. you need a coloured tape so that when the epoxy is cured "green" (you can touch it...but it is still bendable and easy to cut) you can cut the excess with a box cutter along the top edge of the tape. if the tape is clear...you wont know where to cut.

much below 1/2 inch overlap you are simply adding weight to your boat with no advantage in strength or impact resistance. you need to protect the edge of the kayak...the side of the boat really need no more protection.
