Mac's description is about how I have learned to do it. I worried about swimming, too, but in time I got brave enough to stay with the stroke and throw in a good knee brace and leg thrust to make better more aggressive turns with a healthy lean. The knee brace combined with the pressure on the fully sweeping paddle has always kept me afloat although I've come pretty darned close to tipping a few times which, of course, makes the turn all the more exiting.
