tape fo varnish?

I�m planning to varnish the whole kayak. That is, I�m not painting the hull. I�m planning to do it in stages: first put the first coat on the deck, wait till it dries, then flip it, put the first deck on the hull, wait till it dries, flip it, etc.

My question is: do I need to lay down tape so that there is no over lapping between the coat that goes on the deck and the coat that goes on the hull?
