Respirators and beards

Reading the thread below about handling epoxy reminded me of something I read about if you have a beard you should shave it off because the respirator will never fit tight enough. Being an alarmist sometimes, that what I did half way through building my pram. Now that I've finished all the epoxy work I'm growing it back, but I'm sure there is another boat down the road. There always is ... right? Anyway, I'd be interest in what the forum think about this and are there any alternatives.
