Craig,

I bought the thickest rope that would fit through the 1/2 od brass sleeves I lined my bow and stern holes with, and practiced adding extra loops on each end of the double fisherman's knot 'til I wound up with 6 wraps - it takes a few tries if you don't want the total loop to be too big. The only pain with these grab handles is if they hang down while paddling and knock against bow and stern with each wave.
