Depends on what it looks like and how the glass wets out. I like to do 3 then sand, add a 4th and then just wet sand that coat with 220 or even finer to prep for varnish. Some guys sand after 2 coats but I don't want to worry about cutting into the glass so I do the 3.

If it was bare wood I'd do 2, sand, add a third.
