Terry, a hanging knee is a brace connecting the deck to the hull. The wooden ship builders called them knees because they are bent and support something above them. The best best ones were made from tree trunk/limb intersections and were/are referred to as grown knees ( contrasting those cut from timber known as sawn or cut knees ). You can make yours from plywood and join it to the hull/deck joint with dookie schmutz. RogerJ
