Nope, sounds about right. How many coats of epoxy on the covers? I think of it this way - the first coat soaks into the wood but unevenly, the second coat evens out the first but will leave some wood grain exposed and some glossy areas. I sand after two coats. It will be smooth and look for the most part like I just wasted a bunch of epoxy. Never fear, coat it a 3rd time, 4th (is better)if you want then lightly sand to prep for varnish. Should be well sealed.
