I knew there was something I had forgotten about this step.

According to the CLC instruction manual and the video, they recommend applying a coat of clear epoxy to the underside of the deck before mounting and nailing (or otherwise fastening) in place. They do caution that this coating should not be allowed to dry before strapping the deck down. I'm sure the wet epoxy helps in relieving some of the bending stress.
