I build from plans and rough cut the cockpit opening in the deck panels with a jig saw before installing them. This involves a bit of guess work, so I leave a fairly generous overhang (about 1.5" that extends from where the inside edge of the coaming will go and into the cockpit). I cut off the overhang with a coping saw after installing the coaming. By roughing out the opening in the deck panels in this way, I find the deck takes its shape more easily though the transition area between the deckbeam and aft bulkhead.
