We have been cartopping our Tred Avon Double for years with no problems.

Spread the load bars as far apart as possible - I use A Tule rack with standard cradles.

On my Jeep Cherokee the front strap goes over the front Cockpit but its not a problem. It rides very well.

You may want to tie a red or orange flag to the stern.

As for splitting......if you use bow and stern lines dont reef them down too tight or you will put a lot of stress on the hull. There is a lot of overhang thus a lot of leverage so be carefull there.
