Dennis,, just paddle off the tops of the waves and blast on through,,definately put in thigh braces and learn how to roll as what you are doing will be enjoyed much more with the ability to brace during a forward stroke as waves change things(another understatment). Just to explore the mystery of hull shapes try out a CDGulfstream,Tempest 170, Necky Chatham16 and QCC600-700. The WR18 will be faster than the first three but the intersting part is how they all differ in wind/wave handling.
