that amount of bow burying could be normal for some kayaks in 1'-2' waves. Something to check is whether the waves really were 2' as that's just about over your head with the horizon cut off. What kind of kayak did he have? A Current Designs Caribou would have that happen in 2' waves. Those crests sound pretty close together so burying would be accentuated for a longer kayak. Broaching is when the bow is stuck in the downside of a wave with the stern lifted putting the kayak parallel to the wave. It's not something you can steer out of.
