My advise is to drill the holes but fill the holes with epoxy thickened with wood flour. This has worked fine with my boat and I've had mine for four years without any problems. As long as the holes get filled I would not fuss over drilling. Make sure to cover the top and bottom of the rub rails with either glue or epoxy to seal up the area. Hopefully you will extend the life of the rub rails. Nuff said...
