Haven't done a MC yet, but did do a 19 footer by starting at the bow. I think that alternating sides after 3 or 4 stitches, and keeping all stitches at the same tension initially (just a bit snug) is more important than where you start. Keep it even - mirror image. You'll tighten all the stitches later as you take care of "winding".

If you're able to SLIGHTLY bevel the edges of the mating panels prior to stitching, it will help as well.
