Re: Canal Paddling

Last year a friend and I paddled about 15 miles along the old Erie Canal starting near the Niagara river through to the town of Lockport. The paddling was easy with a slight current in our favor, a nice rural landscape, and it was interesting to watch the geology change as we began to cut lower into the rock. The best part was the transit through the two locks at Lockport, where the lockmaster was quite happy to let us do this sitting in our kayaks. When asked about the cost of the toll, the reply was "no motor, no fee".
