Front deck panel piece

I am building A Chesapeake 16 and am about to mount the deck. Im contemplating weather or not to actually scarf on the front piece to the front hull panel to allow the butt joint between the back and front panels of the hull to be at the widest point of the kayak. If I slide the front deck panel a few inches forward I dont need the front piece Id have to scarf on and the butt joint is less than one inch wider. It seems fine to me to do this but the book says otherwise; any reason I shouldnt?
