Why glass the deck?

Is it necessary to glass the deck? It seems like the glass and extra epoxy to fill the weave is only added weight. And there isn't the same need to protect the deck as there is for the hull (rocks are in the water, not the air). Has anyone out there forgone glass on the decks?
