That's a good point, but can be addressed by always brushing some unthickened epoxy on both pieces in a joint before putting on the glue. If it's end grain, I let it soak in a bit then add some more, then add the glue. Never had a starved joint since I started doing this.
Also, inside corners are stress concentrators, so I avoid them whenever I can. Anytime one exists, I fillet it.
This has probably caused more discussion than it should have. The extra weight of that tape probably wouldn't matter even to a racer. I was just puzzled.
