The photo below shows my preference for a backrest. It is adjustable, tilts back for layback rolls, and has no problem with twisting.

The backrest is connected to the rear coaming with a shock cord on the bottom and a cord at the top.

The layup is 2 sheets of very thin ash plywood from a hobby store, backed with carbon cloth but fiberglass would work just as well. Foam is glued with contact cement.
