I am not to familiar with airless sprayers other than using one to spray my house and patio fence. But I would suggest as you say to spray a sample piece of wood first with the paint you intend to use. These spayers take a little adjusting to get the right spray volume. If the spray volume is to heavy you will get all kinds of runs. The plus side of these sprayers is that you can get a nice smooth finish and in a short amount of time. Again if operated properly.

My suggestion is do lots of practice before you shoot the yak.
