The automagic ones are great for when being in the water means you're in trouble but for a kayak, being in the water is half the fun. First roll to cool off, or just for the heck of it, and POOF! And being so much more buoyant means it's going to difficult to get under for your next roll. Perhaps that's why the PDFs aimed at kayakers aren't so buoyant.

If I was doing some serious sea kayaking (maybe like the guy that paddled to Hawaii from the mainland (63 days!)) I'd probably want one of those, but not for lake, river, and close to shore.
