I think Roger Schuman wrote an article in Sea Kayaker about going out in dicey conditions with just a skirt paddle and pfd to try rescues in different conditions. The idea being that if you are dependent upon a pump and paddle float,,what happens if you don't have them or they break? Which begins to drive home the problems with solo paddling when assumptions don't hold.

The funny part is seeing me try it in a Mariner Express where the cockpit sits a lot closer to the stern than most kayaks, "almost there, almost there",,,it's stuff like that that make slippery hulls and sharp ends less than ideal but if you've got the arm strength it's worth trying.
