Jim; I'm with Kurt and Chip on the utility of rub rails. One major advantage that seems to be overlooked is that less experienced kayakers, like me, have a tendancy to brush the side of the hull with the paddle every once in a while. This is even more likely to happen if you fish from your yak. I often find myself using the paddle one handed to adjust my drift while holding the fishing rod in my other hand. My rub rails have the marks to prove thier usefulness after only a couple of months of use.
