watching paint dry...

This is driving me nuts. I'm using my boat this weekend, but couldn't resist putting on the first coat of paint last night. I used white tractor paint. It's an oil-based enamel. The can says it should be dry to the touch in 4 to 6 hours. I painted it 18 hours ago and it's still sticky; not wet precisely, but very tacky. What's up with that? I called my wife, had her check it again, then asked her to put a work lamp on it and run the portable electric heater I use in the winter. Ambient temp is 76, and humidity is 60%. Maybe I got it on a bit thick (it was thick paint), but come on!

I really don't want to have to cram into my plastic boat this weekend, but I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon to go camping with three of my kids. Four people is pretty tight in my Old Town Loon 111! But, I've done it before, and I could do it again. :-)
