if it's any help: at some point i broke down and bought a durn cartridge respirator, and now i think it's great! Price was under 30 US, which isn't cheap but less than I feared. I even use it for sanding when there are no fumes. It lets air out through a valve, so it doesn't fog up your glasses or goggles as quick. I got into a habit of clicking the cartridges off when finished and dropping them into a coffee can with a top, so they last longer and stay clean.
