I'm not sure bronze wool is still available in fine enough grades to give you a satin, as opposed to scratched, finish. I used to use 000 or 0000 to do this.

You can also get the 3M nylon pads in 000 and 0000.

Historically, it was always a better idea to apply gloss and rub down the gloss to satin, in that gloss was harder. The satin varnishes contained flatteners that soften the final finish. Weather or not this is still the case with the modern varnishes would have to be determined by a call to the manufacturer.
