The wooden plates were a bomb for round bars, Allan, I would reckon they would work well with flat bars.

I placed T-nuts in my plates, and ran bolts from above to engage them (all 1/4-20 SS). Unless you have plenty of room between the bars and the roof, it would be better to reverse this. But even still...

...We're gonna rig these cradles to work on Leslie's factory Suburban roof racks, which feature flat bars approximately 2" wide by 1/2" thick, but only about 1 1/4" above the paint job. Not much room to work with there! I found square-shaped U-bolts at the hardware store, which look to be perfect for the situation. We'll soon see about that...
