Linseed Oil, Fine pumice

Posted by Paddler on May 12, 2004

Greg, The easiest and cheapest way is to apply plain old high gloss varnish, then use linseed oil and very fine pumice powder. Let the final coat of varnish dry. Get your some good clean rags, apply linseed oil and moisten the rag, then dip in a dish of pumice powder. Rub lightly and cover the surface. Old time cabinet makers used this method, and so have I when finishing gun stocks (no rifleman likes a shiny buttstock, scares the deer).
